Behind Nubian Divinity: My Story

Let's tap into what sets me apart as a spiritual worker, intuitive, and equity advocate.

Hello,

Welcome back to the second edition of the Nubian Divinity newsletter! As I gradually get into the habit of creating this piece of content, I’ve decided that keeping it to one release a month is a great place to start. What you can find here is me chatting about the business, what it means, how it’s evolving, where you can find me, maybe some personal updates and most importantly, how you can follow along this journey and witness the growth firsthand! I’m hoping to document it all and pull from my own learnings tools and insights that I can in turn, share with you.

Who am I? (Long story as short as I can make it…)

I could easily go on about future me and share with you all the brewing plans I have for Nubian Divinity - which I will eventually. However, you’d be missing key pieces of my story and they “why” behind the business. We can not move forward unless we revisit the past that has shaped and led me to this calling for empowerment, surrender and clarity.

Let’s start this story from the very beginning! I’m a first generation Canadian born in Ottawa, Canada in the early 90’s to two hardworking, dedicated and devoted Haitian parents. I’m an only child who grew up amongst six adults (no first cousins on my mom’s side of the family) and was absorbing the importance of experience sharing, education and storytelling at a very early age. Let’s just say, this became my training ground for sharpening my listening skills. I was brought up in an environment that couldn’t have molded anything other than a communicator. Through the languages I was exposed to (French, Haitian Creole and English) and the variety of cultures from my own to the vast cultural makeup of Canada and also by attending an international school from kindergarten to high school, I quickly learned to adapt in order to integrate. I could also navigate these various scenarios and cultures I was regularly exposed to; the switch could be from one entryway to another.

Puzzle with missing piece

Though there was so much richness in experiences and the backgrounds I was exposed to, there was also years of turmoil and confusion. I would wonder where I really fit within these identities and often experiencing none of these identities fully claiming me either. At home, the structure felt very different from the flexibility I would hear of from other peers who did not share my similar experience due to cultural differences. I sought out people, habits, and opportunities in the hope that being more malleable would allow me to feel more connected and accepted. In a sense, this is a story I’ve witness reemerge multiple times throughout my life. I’m continuously learning to appreciate the unconventionality of my story, but this was not always the case. Human beings are multifaceted, and this is only one aspect of who I am, but the experiences in my life that have pulled out the part that felt isolated and molded to the needs of others rather than my own are at the foundation of how I show up in my readings and spiritual work. They remind me that I don’t have all the answers, but I do know what it feels like to lose yourself in someone else’s sauce and forget your own recipe. Lived truth is what allows me to hold space with compassion, clarity, and honesty. The only north star and guiding light I had in these moments of doubt was my inner voice. Something I always stand by in making any life decision. I listened to it when it told me to leave Ottawa and move to Toronto, leave that unfulfilling relationship and continue to listen to my own inner compass even when (and sometimes, especially when) it’s out of alignment with others.

That’s the mission behind Nubian Divinity. Taking agency. In your life choices, in how you choose to treat others, and in how deeply you want to learn about them, there’s power in recognizing that these differences are what make them who they are. From there, you can decide: does this serve me or not? With my end-of-life work, and through my own anticipatory grief as an only child, I’ve come to see how important it is to support those in grief while also encouraging people to reflect on what their legacy will be. But to truly have agency, you must begin with accountability.

These are the principles I think about and try to live by every day. Through spirituality and tarot, I found true belonging within myself and my life choices, rather than seeking it externally, and that is what I want to share with you.
